Rescuing Farm Animals From Cruelty Should Be Legal
In the summer of 2021, an activist from animal rights group Direct Action Everywhere (DxE) secretly gained covert access to one of California’s largest chicken slaughterhouses, a Foster Farms facility in the Central Valley town of Livingston, for about six weeks.
Using hidden infrared cameras that can see in the dark, the DxE activist captured video showing a production line moving too fast – about 140 chickens are killed every minute on each of Livingston’s four slaughter lines – to give them a humane death to offer animals. Live birds are thrown, crushed, left dead, and smothered under piles of dead birds. Some are not properly stunned before being killed. And although the DxE footage doesn’t show it, inspectors working for the US Department of Agriculture have reported seeing evidence of birds at the Livingston facility being dunked alive in a tank of boiling water to loosen the feathers to remove.
